Washington D.C. has a vibrant and thriving art scene, and a community of exciting visual artists, whose work is not only found in galleries and museums, but also on buildings and walls. In Washington D.C. art is integral to life and can be experienced in many diverse forms and places. 2019 sees at least two art events that are not to be missed.

Daguerreotypes: Five Decades of Collecting

Exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, until 2nd June 2019

Daguerreotypes were early photographic portraits, which were popular in the mid-nineteenth century. The process was delicate; a treated silver plate was exposed through light, using an early type of camera. The National Portrait Gallery has been collecting daguerreotypes for 50 years, and this exhibition is to celebrate this milestone. The artworks are fascinating chronicles of the birth of modern photography.

Bellevue Festival of Arts

26th to 28th July in downtown Bellevue, Washington

The festival will celebrate its 35th year in 2019. The judged fine art and craft fair takes place outdoors, along Bellevue Way, at the beautiful shores of Lake Washington. The festival is free to the public, who can meet the artists and craftspeople in person.
